The opening
Two investigations begin with people treated as expendable
Holden survives an attack on an ice hauler. Miller is paid to find Julie Mao. Both cases expose how easily distant powers spend lives in the Belt.
Where the story begins
A distress call destroys Holden's ordinary life
The Canterbury diverts toward the abandoned Scopuli, leaving Holden and a small shuttle crew away from the ice hauler when a stealth ship destroys it. His decision to broadcast the evidence makes the survivors visible, but it also turns an uncertain attack into a political fact that Earth, Mars, and the Belt immediately interpret for themselves.
On Ceres, detective Joe Miller is told to locate Julie Mao and quietly send her home. What begins as a corporate kidnapping job becomes an attempt to understand why an intelligent, privileged woman chose the OPA and why powerful people need her story contained.
