The opening
The Rocinante family separates into four unfinished lives
Repairs create a pause, and each crew member uses it to return to a person or place left unresolved. Their private journeys enter the same hidden war.

Going home reveals why the crew became a home
Naomi receives a message from her former partner Marco Inaros about their son Filip. Amos returns to Earth after the death of the woman who protected him as a child. Alex visits the family he abandoned on Mars. Holden remains at Tycho Station, where stolen ships and a missing protomolecule sample suggest that someone is assembling power outside the visible political order.
The separation gives each character a full viewpoint for the first time. It also prevents them from sharing information when attacks begin. What looks like four personal detours becomes four positions inside a coordinated attempt to break Earth, Mars, and the Belt.
